AT A GLANCE

Why go?

Grande Mosquée Sékhounayah de Coronthie sits on the Kaloum Peninsula in Conakry, Guinea's capital, just past the Tombo power plant in the Coronthie neighborhood. It is not the famous Grand Mosque of Conakry (Mosquée Fayçal) that draws most guidebook mentions — this is a smaller, local house of worship that belongs to the rhythm of daily prayer in one of the city's oldest districts. For a traveler wandering Kaloum, the call to prayer drifting from a neighborhood mosque like Sékhounayah is part of the living texture of Conakry: the sound of a coastal city that has been a center of West African Islam for generations.↗↗

The mosque serves the Coronthie community and follows the five daily prayer cycle timed to Conakry's longitude on the Greenwich meridian (UTC+0). Visitors interested in the religious life of Guinea's capital can use it as a waypoint while exploring the Kaloum Peninsula's mix of colonial architecture, working neighborhoods, and market streets. Access for non-worshippers is not guaranteed, so it is worth calling ahead at +224 622 22 95 92 to ask about visiting outside prayer times.↗↗
