AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Pyrgaki Beach is a wide, wind-sheltered stretch of golden sand on the southwestern coast of Naxos, about 20 kilometres from the main town. Known for its shallow turquoise water, soft sand that extends far into the sea, and a backdrop of cedar trees and sand dunes, it feels like an escape from the more organised beaches closer to Chora.↗↗
The beach is actually a succession of three sandy coves, protected from the northerly Meltemi winds that can roughen up other Naxos beaches. With views across to the islands of Iraklia and Ios, a NATURA 2000 conservation designation, and enough room to spread out even in August, Pyrgaki rewards those willing to go a little further down the coast road.↗↗↗
What Makes It Special
Pyrgaki's geography works in its favour. Set at the southwestern tip of Naxos where the coast curves inward, the beach is shielded from the strong north winds that sweep the Cyclades each summer. The water stays calm and clear even on breezy days, making it one of the most reliable swimming spots on the island. The seabed drops off very gradually — wading out feels effortless, which makes it a favourite for families with young children.
