AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Tucked into the sprawling Tung Chung North Park on Lantau Island, the Chinese Herb Garden (中藥園) is one of Hong Kong's most unusual and quietly rewarding free attractions. Run by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, this dedicated plot showcases more than a hundred species of medicinal plants arranged not by looks but by what they do for the body, with a small label beside each herb naming it and giving its scientific identity, plant family, origin and therapeutic use.↗↗↗
What sets the garden apart is its intent: it was created to introduce visitors to traditional Chinese medicine in a hands-on way. A linked indoor exhibition hall extends the lesson with display panels and interactive computer games, while a themed Trail of Health winds outward through the park, illustrating classic Chinese wellness exercises. It is a niche, low-key experience, but for a free afternoon stop it is genuinely memorable and far less crowded than the big-ticket sights on the MTR map.↗
