AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Butinovača is a 1,127-metre summit in Croatia's Velebit Nature Park, crowned by sweeping views of the Adriatic Sea and the dramatic limestone ridgeline known as the Dabarske Kukovi. Reached by well-marked trails branching off the famous Premužić Path, it is one of the most rewarding day hikes in central Velebit.↗↗
The peak sits above the mountain lodge at Ravni Dabar and the Dabarska kosa saddle, a frequent trailhead accessed from the main road at Baške Oštarije. Whether you take the direct two-kilometre climb or extend into a longer loop over neighbouring peaks, the summit rewards effort with expansive panoramas stretching from the continental Velebit massif to the blue islands offshore.↗↗
A Summit on the Dabarske Kukovi Ridge
Butinovača belongs to the cluster of peaks called Dabarske kukovi, a chain of rocky summits running along the western flank of central Velebit. At 1,127 metres it is not the highest in the range, but it stands prominently above the saddle at Dabarska kosa (943 m) and offers a commanding vantage point over both the inland karst plateau and the coastline some fifteen kilometres to the west. From the top you can look directly at neighbouring summits — Široki kuk, Vranji kuk, Žuti kuk, and the higher Kiza — as well as out toward the Adriatic islands on clear days.
