AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Doctor's Cave Beach Club is Montego Bay's most storied shoreline—a private bathing club founded in 1906 on a crescent of powder-white sand framed by palm trees and turquoise Caribbean water. Located on Jimmy Cliff Boulevard in the heart of the Hip Strip, it has welcomed generations of visitors who come for snorkeling, lounging, and a swim in waters that hold between 78°F and 84°F all year round.↗↗↗
What makes Doctor's Cave special isn't just the beach itself—it's more than a century of history. The club was born when Dr. Alexander James McCatty donated his personal beach to the people of Montego Bay, and it rose to international fame when a British osteopath declared its waters had curative powers. Today, paying a day pass places you on a stretch of sand that helped launch Jamaica's tourism industry.↗↗
A Beach Born from Medicine
The story begins with Dr. Alexander James McCatty, a Montego Bay physician who in 1906 generously gave his small private beach to establish a bathing club for the community. The beach's unusual name comes from its original entrance: a natural cave through which doctors and their patients would descend to reach the sand for therapeutic sea bathing. That cave was lost to a hurricane in 1932, but the name stuck.
