AT A GLANCE

Why go?

In the forecourt of Toyonaka City Okamachi Library stands a quiet memorial that carries more than a century of grief and hope in a handful of lines: the Tōge Sankichi Memorial Poetry Monument, carved with the famous refrain にんげんをかえせ — “Return to Humanity” — from the atomic-bomb poetry of Tōge Sankichi (1917–1953). The poet was born in this very city, where his father worked, before his family moved to Hiroshima; there, on 6 August 1945, he survived the bombing and gave the rest of his too-short life to writing it down. This is a place of remembrance rather than spectacle, but a stop here is one of the most moving encounters with Osaka's peace-memory landscape.↗↗↗

Toyonaka raised the stele in October 1995 to mark the 50th anniversaries both of the end of the war and of the bombing itself, framing it as part of the city's pledge as a Non-Nuclear Peace Declaration City to pass on the horror of nuclear weapons and the value of peace to future generations. The poem is inscribed in Japanese on the front and in English on the reverse, so the message travels to every visitor who pauses before it. Read on its own, the monument is brief; set against the history it recalls, it is unforgettable.
