AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Ala Archa National Park is a sweeping Tian Shan wilderness just 40 kilometers from the center of Bishkek, making it one of Central Asia's most accessible mountain escapes. Established in 1976, the park protects 194 square kilometers of juniper forest, alpine meadows, rushing rivers, and 20-plus glaciers beneath peaks that top 4,800 meters. Whether you want a two-hour riverside stroll or an all-day glacier hike, Ala Archa delivers dramatic mountain scenery without requiring a multi-day commitment.↗↗↗
The park's name means "variegated juniper" — a nod to the archa trees that dot the dry, stony slopes and give the gorge its characteristic appearance. Beyond the trees, the landscape climbs rapidly through spruce groves and open valleys to jagged summits, icefalls, and the Soviet-era mountaineering culture that still lives in the rock memorials and old huts tucked above the treeline.↗↗
Trails for Every Pace
From the alpine base area (around 2,200 meters), the trail system splits into left and right, offering choices from gentle to gruelling. The Ala Archa River Trail heads right and follows the valley floor — mostly flat, shaded by trees, and lined with jaw-dropping gorge views. The first two kilometers are the most popular stretch, ending at a viewpoint that makes a satisfying turnaround for casual visitors. You can push further to six kilometers or beyond; the trail rewards you with no dead ends.
