Besh-Tash Lake

AT A GLANCE

Why go?

Besh-Tash Lake is a striking turquoise high-mountain lake perched at nearly 3,000 metres in the Talas Region of Kyrgyzstan, cradled by the jagged peaks of the Talas Alaa-Too range. Named after five ancient standing stones further down the gorge — "Besh-Tash" means "Five Stones" in Kyrgyz — it is the largest and most spectacular lake inside Besh-Tash Nature Park, a protected area established in 1996 to safeguard the region's spruce forests, alpine meadows, and rare wildlife including the elusive snow leopard.↗↗↗↗

The lake's colour is its headline feature: a vivid turquoise that contrasts dramatically with the surrounding snow-dusted peaks and green alpine grass. Reaching it from the city of Talas involves a rewarding full-day drive and short trek along a dirt road that climbs roughly 30 km up the Besh-Tash gorge. For travellers willing to make the effort, the reward is one of the most beautiful and least-crowded mountain lakes in northern Kyrgyzstan.↗↗

For travellers willing to make the effort, the reward is one of the most beautiful and least-crowded mountain lakes in northern Kyrgyzstan.↗↗

What Makes It Special

Besh-Tash Lake sits at an elevation of about 2,994 metres in a rock-dammed basin at the head of the Besh-Tash gorge, roughly 47 km south of the city of Talas. The lake stretches approximately 1.3 km long and 550 m wide, reaching depths of around 28 metres. Its water carries a remarkable turquoise hue, the result of glacial minerals suspended in the cold flow, which shifts to deeper blue-green tones depending on the light and time of day.↗↗

A small unnamed lake lies just below Besh-Tash, adding another reflective pool to the panorama. The broader valley system feeds the Besh-Tash River, a left tributary of the Talas River, and supports rainbow trout in its cold runs. The gorge is part of Besh-Tash Nature Park, which spans over 13,700 hectares of Tien Shan spruce forest, juniper slopes, and summer pasture — a landscape shaped by centuries of nomadic herding.↗↗↗

The name itself carries a legend. Elders tell of five bandit brothers who robbed travellers in this valley until their own father cursed them for drawing a hand against him. Fleeing in different directions, the brothers turned to stone, and from a distance the five boulders still look like men wearing traditional Kyrgyz kalpak hats. Whether or not the stones remain standing, the story adds a folkloric layer to the landscape.↗

Getting There

The gateway is Talas, the capital of Kyrgyzstan's smallest region, about four hours' drive west of Bishkek. From Talas, a dirt road leads south into the gorge. The lower valley section — the first 10–15 km — is passable in most vehicles and offers a pleasant short outing to the river and spruce forest.↗↗

Reaching the lake itself requires a 4WD vehicle and a local driver. The upper road crosses fords and runs through moraine fields where conditions shift with rain and snowmelt. Even experienced off-road drivers cannot guarantee delivery to the shore after wet weather. From the point the road becomes impassable, a short walk of about 15 minutes along the moraine brings you to the lake. A pre-arranged driver who waits for your return is essential — mobile reception disappears higher in the gorge.↗↗↗

When to Visit

The prime season for the lake is summer through early autumn (July to September), when the high passes are free of snow and the road is most reliable. April and May offer a special spectacle: watching the lake break free from winter ice, turquoise water emerging through fracturing sheets. However, the upper road may still be blocked by snowmelt and debris at that time.↗↗↗

The lower gorge is accessible from late spring through autumn and suits families or a half-day nature walk without committing to the full lake trek.↗↗

What to Expect at the Lake

There are no built facilities at Besh-Tash Lake. Camping sites are plentiful on the flat ground around the shore. The environment is raw and high-altitude: expect strong wind, rapid weather changes, and intense sun even when the air feels cold. Debris from rockfalls and moraine define the terrain around the lake basin. The surrounding peaks create a dramatic amphitheatre, and the silence is profound.↗↗

Wildlife in the broader park includes ibex, roe deer, marmots, and golden eagles. The snow leopard inhabits the high zones but is extremely rarely seen. The river holds rainbow trout, and the park's forests shelter red-list species such as Semenov's fir. Do not approach livestock herds without the shepherd's permission; the area remains active summer pasture.↗↗↗

Practical Tips

Fill your tank in Talas and carry cash — there are no shops, ATMs, or reliable mobile signal inside the park. Download offline maps before departure. After heavy rain, check road conditions that same morning rather than relying on the previous day's information.↗↗

Pack trekking boots with good grip, a windproof layer, warm clothing, sun protection, a water filter or boiling means (do not drink from the lake or river untreated), food, a power bank, and a first-aid kit. Set a firm turnaround time for your return descent and share it with someone outside the park.↗↗

Besh-Tash is a protected area: take all rubbish out, stay on existing tracks, and do not light fires in dry grass. Consider pairing the trip with a visit to the Manas Ordo memorial complex near Talas, but plan them as separate days given the lake trek's physical demands.↗↗
