AT A GLANCE

Why go?

On the grounds of the National Medical Center in central Seoul stands a low red-brick building that looks like it was shipped in from a Scandinavian town: six gabled houses joined into one row, climbing ivy, clerestory windows along the roof, canopies over the doors. It is the NMC Scandinavia Memorial Hall, a small museum inside the former staff housing of the Swedish, Danish and Norwegian doctors and nurses who ran this hospital for its first decade.↗

The reason it exists is an unusual piece of postwar history. During the Korean War, Sweden fielded a Red Cross hospital, Denmark sent the hospital ship Jutlandia to Busan's harbour and Norway ran a mobile surgical hospital; after the armistice those three countries, working with the UN Korean Reconstruction Agency, went on to fund and build the National Medical Center, which opened in 1958 and was jointly operated with Korean staff until 1968. The memorial hall, opened in 2015 and housed in the preserved 1958 Nordic staff residence, tells that story in photographs, documents, everyday objects from the hospital's early years and a screening room of archival film — a compact, genuinely moving museum you can walk in and out of in half an hour.

The reason it exists is an unusual piece of postwar history. The memorial hall, opened in 2015 and housed in the preserved 1958 Nordic staff residence, tells that story in photographs, documents, everyday objects from the hospital's early years and a screening room of archival film — a compact, genuinely moving museum you can walk in and out of in half an hour.

Why this corner of Seoul has a Nordic past

In 1955 the United Nations Korean Reconstruction Agency decided that war-ravaged South Korea needed a modern national medical centre, and three Northern European countries volunteered to build and staff it. After a three-way agreement signed in March 1956, the hospital was completed on 2 October 1958 and formally opened its doors to patients on 28 November 1958. For the next ten years Swedish, Danish and Norwegian medical teams worked alongside Korean colleagues; by the time the aid programme ended and full control passed to the Korean government on 1 October 1968, roughly two million people had been treated, about 1.4 million of them free of charge. At a time when Korea had almost no public health infrastructure, this was where the idea of public medicine took root — and where a generation of Korean doctors and nurses trained.

The war-era debt came first. Sweden ran a Red Cross field hospital in Busan, Denmark's hospital ship Jutlandia treated soldiers and civilians off the southern port, and Norway operated a mobile surgical hospital at Dongducheon. When the fighting stopped, the Korean government asked those medical teams to stay — and they did, in the form of the hospital they built and the staff quarters they lived in.

The ground under it all is older still. The hospital sits on the site of the Joseon dynasty's Hunryeongwon, the office that oversaw military examinations and weapons training, and just before that on the grounds of the 1934 Gyeongseong Bumin Hospital, a colonial-era municipal hospital; a marker stone near the main entrance records the lineage.

The building: a street of houses instead of a hospital block

What most visitors notice first is the architecture. The memorial hall was built in 1958 as the residence for the Scandinavian medical staff, and it was designed as a Northern European terrace-house type rather than institutional housing: six gabled units joined in a row, each stepped slightly sideways along the slope of the site, each with its own pair of entrances front and back. Canopies shelter the doors and the ground-floor windows facing the garden, the pitched roof rises higher on the west side, and clerestory windows along the east slope pull daylight into the rooms. Shutters and glazing have changed over the decades, but the exterior silhouette is close to the day it was built — enough so that the city has registered the building as a Seoul Future Heritage site.

The setting adds to the effect. Past the hospital's formal main facade and car park, on the eastern side of the grounds, the brick row opens onto a green lawn garden ringed by low red-brick and white buildings — a courtyard of the kind you would expect to find outside a Nordic town hall or library rather than in the middle of Euljiro. It is a genuine pocket of calm within one of Seoul's busiest commercial districts, and visitors are welcome to sit in the sunlight even if they skip the exhibition.

Inside the memorial hall

The museum was inaugurated on 2 April 2015 in a ceremony attended by the ambassadors of Denmark, Norway and Sweden, former hospital directors and alumni of the National Medical Center. Its layout follows the building's own history. On the first floor, the National Medical Center exhibition reads at a glance through the story of how Sweden, Denmark and Norway came to found a hospital in Seoul, with archival material that also captures daily life in Korea in 1958. The second floor traces the hospital's early clinical work and its long development since — the growth, the crises and the re-invention of a public flagship institution.

There is also a separate screening room, where slide-film footage documents the activities of the three Scandinavian medical teams, together with a small rest space to watch it in. The collection is modest in size; the point is the density of what it records — letters, photographs, instruments and the names of people who spent years of their careers here.

Next door, the single-storey brick building that once housed the Scandinavia Club is worth knowing about too. That club was the birthplace of Korea's first buffet restaurant, opened for Nordic staff who missed home cooking; it later opened to the public and became a city landmark before closing in 2012. Today the building serves the grounds as a café and dining space.

Visiting

The memorial hall sits on the National Medical Center grounds at 245 Euljiro, Jung District — reachable on foot from the Euljiro and Dongdaemun History & Culture Park area. It is listed among the hospital's in-house facilities as being by the lawn garden, with weekday visiting hours of 10:00 to 16:00. Because it is an exhibition inside a working public hospital, visit with patients in mind: keep voices low, stay on the way to the garden, and do not treat the wards as part of the tour.

Plan it as a 30- to 45-minute stop rather than a destination in itself, paired with a walk across the lawn and onward to the nearby Design Plaza and Dongdaemun shopping streets, or with the small green of Hunryeongwon Park on the other side of the road, where a stone marks the site of colonial Keijō Normal School. One practical caveat: the hospital has been pursuing a new-build relocation on the neighbouring former US engineer-command site, so facilities and access points on the current grounds can shift — it is worth confirming hours before you set out.

For anyone interested in how aid, medicine and architecture cross borders, this is one of Seoul's quietly best small museums: a house built for foreign nurses and surgeons that has outlasted their departure, kept intact, and turned into a room where two million treated patients and a decade of shared practice are still being remembered.

What to notice

The stepped row of six gables — each unit with its own front and back door, laid out like a Northern European village street rather than a hospital wing.

The entrance and window canopies and the roofline clerestory windows, practical devices for shading summer sun and admitting light at Nordic latitudes, transplanted to Seoul.

The lawn garden between the memorial hall, the old Scandinavia Club building and the red-brick east-medicine block, the most peaceful open space in this part of Euljiro.

Ground-floor exhibits set in 1958: the founding of the hospital by three countries, and everyday Korean street life from the same year.

The screening room's slide-film archive of the Swedish, Danish and Norwegian medical teams' work in Korea.

What makes it special

01

A museum inside the 1958 residence built for the Swedish, Danish and Norwegian medical teams who founded and ran Seoul's National Medical Center.

02

Six joined gabled houses in red brick, ivy-clad and lighted by roof clerestories — a Northern European terrace-house design rare in Korea, registered as a Seoul Future Heritage building.

03

The story it preserves is concrete: about two million patients treated in the hospital's first ten years of joint Korean-Scandinavian operation, most of them free of charge.

04

Beside it lies a green lawn garden ringed by brick buildings, an unexpected quiet spot in the middle of Euljiro and Dongdaemun.

A little planning goes a long way

Opening hours listed by the hospital are weekdays 10:00–16:00; there is no weekend service listed, so plan a weekday visit.
It is an exhibition within a functioning public hospital, not a standalone cultural venue — treat it with the same quiet you would expect on a ward corridor.
Half an hour covers both floors and the film room; add time on the lawn if the weather is good, and continue on foot toward Dongdaemun History & Culture Park and the DDP.
Because the hospital is working toward a new build on the adjacent former US military engineer site, confirm the hall's location and hours before travelling across the city.
