AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Wat Hua Khua (ວັດຫົວຂົວ) is a local Buddhist temple in the village of Ban Hua Khua in Vientiane's Chanthabuly district. The name translates as "Temple at the Head of the Bridge," reflecting its position at the entrance to the village near one of the city's crossing points. It serves as the spiritual center for the surrounding community and sits within easy reach of Hua Khua Market, one of Vientiane's most popular fresh food markets.↗↗
While not among Vientiane's headline tourist temples, Wat Hua Khua offers visitors a glimpse into the everyday religious life of a Lao urban village — the kind of working wat where residents bring offerings, monks receive alms, and festivals mark the community calendar. Its accessible grounds and quiet compound make it a peaceful stop for those exploring the neighborhoods between the city center and the great golden stupa of Pha That Luang.↗
A Village Temple with a Bridge-Head Name
Wat Hua Khua belongs to Ban Hua Khua (ບ້ານຫົວຂົວ), a traditional village whose name means "head of the bridge" — a reference to its historical position at a river or canal crossing. Like most Lao village wats, the temple has grown alongside the community it serves, providing a space for daily worship, ordination ceremonies, and seasonal festivals. The compound is modest and functional rather than grand, with the characteristic multi-tiered roofline and open assembly hall of Lao Theravada Buddhist architecture.
