AT A GLANCE
Why go?
The Private Cars Collection of HSH Prince of Monaco is a one-of-a-kind museum housing roughly 100 automobiles assembled over four decades by Prince Rainier III, spanning from a 1903 De Dion-Bouton to 2013 Formula 1 cars. Reopened in 2022 in a striking new 3,500 m² venue beside Port Hercule—right on the Grand Prix de Monaco circuit—the collection blends princely limousines, legendary race cars, and everyday classics in a journey through automotive history.↗↗
Visitors encounter Rolls-Royce Phantoms, Ferrari Testarossas, a Tyrrell P34 six-wheeler, the Lancia 037 that defined the Monte-Carlo Rally, and the very Lexus Landaulet used at Prince Albert II's 2011 wedding. Rotating temporary exhibitions—like the record-breaking 2024 Ferrari F1 show—keep the experience fresh even for repeat visitors.↗↗
A Prince's Personal Passion
"This is not a car museum but a personal collection of old cars from all ages and all countries. Popular or prestigious, they marked their era and I liked them." Those were Prince Rainier III's own words about the assemblage he built between the late 1950s and his death in 2005. The garage beneath the Princely Palace grew too small for his hundred-odd treasures—monumental silhouettes, gleaming bonnets, regal grilles—so in 1993 he unveiled them publicly at the Fontvieille terraces.
