AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Baie des Pigeons is a secluded, wild beach on the north coast of Madagascar, the most tranquil of the famous Trois Baies near Diego Suarez (Antsiranana). With turquoise waters, a sweeping crescent of white sand, and dunes offering panoramic ocean views, it rewards the effort of getting there with a rare sense of solitude.↗↗↗
The bay sits about four kilometres east of the fishing village of Ramena along a sandy coastal track, past the ruins of colonial military fortifications at Cap Miné. It is separated from the neighbouring Baie des Dunes by a rocky peninsula, giving it a hidden, almost secret quality that the more-visited bays lack.↗↗
A Bay Named for Its Birds
The name Baie des Pigeons — Pigeon Bay — dates to a time when the dry forests surrounding the shore teemed with wild pigeons, quails, and turtle doves. Today those birds are harder to spot, but the name endures and suits the bay's gentle character. The soundscape is dominated by waves breaking softly on the sand and the occasional cry of seabirds overhead. The immediate surroundings feature xerophilic vegetation adapted to the arid climate, including distinctive pachypodium plants that give the landscape an almost otherworldly quality.
