AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Grand Gaube Public Beach is a serene stretch of white coral sand on Mauritius's north coast, tucked into the heart of an authentic fishing village that has resisted the tourist crowds found elsewhere in the region. Sheltered by a protected lagoon, its calm, shallow waters and shade from casuarina trees make it an ideal spot for families, swimmers, and anyone seeking a slower pace of island life.↗↗
What sets this beach apart is its front-row seat to daily Mauritian fishing culture — colourful pirogues bob in the lagoon, fishermen sell their morning catch at the jetty, and on weekends local families gather under the filaos for picnics. The beach is free to access, unstructured, and refreshingly low-key, offering a genuine alternative to the resort-lined beaches of Grand Baie just 12 kilometres west.↗↗
The Lagoon and Water Conditions
Grand Gaube Public Beach sits within a protected lagoon that extends along roughly a kilometre of coastline, shielded by a coral reef barrier. The sea floor drops gradually from ankle-deep shallows to about two metres, making the water safe for children and less confident swimmers. Waves are gentle and the current is negligible, so the lagoon functions almost like a natural swimming pool for much of the year.
