AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Praia do Wimbe is Pemba's signature beach — a sweeping arc of pale sand along the Indian Ocean, lined with coconut palms and backed by a relaxed strip of beach bars, seafood restaurants, and small guesthouses. Just a few kilometres from the town centre and even closer to the airport, it is the go-to spot where locals and visitors alike come to swim, watch the sunset, and feel the warm sea breeze.↗↗↗
What sets Wimbe apart is its combination of calm, clear turquoise water with a gently shelving sandy bottom — ideal for families and first-time ocean swimmers — alongside a genuine fishing-village atmosphere that keeps it feeling uncontrived. The beach has grown into a focal point for Pemba's tourism, yet retains the laid-back, lived-in charm of a place where dhow crews still haul their catch ashore in the late afternoon.↗↗↗
Swimming and the Sea
Wimbe's water is one of the best swimming environments on Mozambique's northern coast. The sand bottom extends a good way out and the depth increases very gradually, so no water shoes are needed and children can wade comfortably. Sea temperatures stay between 25 °C and 30 °C year-round, making a dip pleasant in any month. The Indian Ocean swell is moderate here, and sea breezes keep the afternoon heat manageable.
