AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Bundi Orange River Base Camp is a riverside adventure camp and outfitper tucked on the banks of the Orange (Gariep) River, just across the Namibian border and roughly 8–10 km from the border town of Noordoewer in southern Namibia. Set in the old pioneering River Rafters base camp that once launched expeditions down the Richtersveld stretch of the river, it is today a family-run launchpad for canoeing, rafting and fishing trips, as well as a laid-back place to sleep under a gloriously starry sky.↗↗↗
What makes it appealing is the combination of easy, family-friendly water adventure and genuine riverside hospitality. The Orange River here is graded 1–2 — small, forgiving rapids perfect for first-timers and children — and no prior experience is needed, since guides paddle alongside and teach you as you go. Trips range from a half-day taste to a five-day journey with nights spent camping on the sandbanks, and guests consistently single out the guides, the food and the scenery as the heart of the experience.↗
An adventure camp on the Orange River
The Orange River forms the natural border between Namibia and South Africa, and Bundi's base camp sits on its Namibian side, reachable via the Roshpinah turnoff from Noordoewer about 10 km from the border post. The site occupies the old River Rafters base camp used in the pioneering days to explore the rafting and canoeing route that threads through the arid, boulder-strewn landscape of the Richtersveld. It's also a useful mid-point stop for travellers driving between Cape Town and Windhoek, with sweeping river views and cool air-conditioned chalets to decompress in before or after time on the water.
