AT A GLANCE
Why go?
The Fournier Marsh Bird Observatory is a wooden viewing platform perched over a tranquil wetland in the Domaine de Deva, one of New Caledonia's largest protected natural estates near Bourail. Built in 2016, it offers fixed binoculars and a sheltered deck from which visitors can watch an array of endemic and migratory birds gliding between mangrove-fringed waters and dry forest — all on a free, easy ten-minute walk from the car park.↗↗↗
The marsh sits at the junction of savanna and dry forest on the west coast, making it one of the most important wetland zones in the region. Around fifteen bird species regularly haunt its waters, including the whistling kite, white-faced egret, cormorants, kingfishers, and the extraordinary New Caledonian crow — often called the world's most intelligent bird, famous for crafting custom tools to extract insects from tree hollows.↗↗↗
