AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Step back in time at Waardenburg and Neerijnen Estate, where medieval history meets stunning natural beauty along the Waal River. This expansive landscape offers a unique blend of two historic castles, lush park forests, and vibrant river meadows. Whether you are a history buff, a nature enthusiast, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, the estate provides an unforgettable escape. The area is renowned for its rich biodiversity, with over 300 wild plant species and abundant wildlife, making it a paradise for hikers and birdwatchers alike.
Historical Castles and Gardens
The estate is home to two iconic castles: Kasteel Waardenburg and Huis Neerijnen. Kasteel Waardenburg, founded in 1265, is a striking example of medieval architecture with its horseshoe-shaped layout and authentic elements. Although currently used for business purposes, it occasionally opens its doors during Open Monument Day. Nearby, Huis Neerijnen, built around 1350, now serves as a municipal office but features a beautifully maintained garden accessible to visitors. The park connecting the two castles was designed in the English landscape style by Leonard Springer in 1922, offering picturesque views and serene walking paths.
Visitors can also explore the rietgedekte korenmolen, a thatched grain mill dating back to the 18th century. This hexagonal mill is one of only eight of its kind in the Netherlands and stands as a testament to the region's agricultural heritage.
