AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Bishnu Mandir, also known as Saket Dham, is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu tucked at the foot of the Chure Hills in Bhimdatta (Mahendranagar), the far-western gateway town of Nepal's Sudurpashchim Province. Believed to have been established by the Pandavas of Hindu epic legend, the temple is surrounded by forest, fed by rivers, and flanked by two serene ponds where lotus flowers bloom and colorful fish glide beneath the surface.↗↗
With a 4.8-star rating from over 50 Google reviews and 300+ visitor photos, Bishnu Mandir has quietly become one of Kanchanpur district's most beloved sites — part pilgrimage destination, part nature retreat. It sits just a short drive from Mahendranagar's town center, making it an effortless escape from the heat and noise of the Terai plains into a green, hilly world that feels worlds apart.↗↗
A Temple Steeped in Legend
According to local tradition, the idol of Lord Vishnu enshrined here dates to the Pandava era — the epoch of the Mahabharata. It is believed that the five Pandava brothers erected this image during their final northward journey (Uttarapanth) after the great war. The deity is depicted reclining on the cosmic serpent Sheshnag, with Brahma, the creator god, rising from a lotus emerging from Vishnu's navel — a square-based black stone carving of remarkable antiquity said to be the oldest statue in the region.
