Bukha Fort
On the wild northern shoulder of Oman, where the Musandam Peninsula thrusts into the strait between Arabia and Iran, Bukha Fort keeps watch over a small fishing harbor in a sweeping crescent of blue water. Built as a Portuguese stronghold in the sixteenth century and later pressed into service by Omani imams, the squat stone fortress looks less like a fairy-tale castle and more like what it always was: a working outpost guarding one of the most strategic sea lanes on earth. Today it is one of Musandam's most rewarding stops for travellers driving the coastal road between Khasab and the UAE border. The fort is compact enough to explore in half an hour, yet the walk out onto its walls rewards you with a panorama of the Gulf, the village's dhow boats, and the bare mountains rearing up directly behind the seafront.
