Lake Sake
Lake Sake is a small, shallow freshwater lake in Rwanda's Eastern Province, in Ngoma District, named after the nearby town of Sake. Sitting at roughly 1,326 metres above sea level and only a few metres deep, it belongs to the same lowland lake cluster as Lake Mugesera and Lake Rweru, a quiet wetland world far from the well-trodden Lake Kivu resort circuit. This is not a beach-holiday destination but a place to experience a slower, everyday side of rural Rwanda: broad open water fringed by low shoreline land, local fishing, and wide, bird-filled skies. It suits travellers with their own transport who are happy to wander a quiet lakeshore, watch the light change on the water, and talk with fishing communities rather than book into a resort.
