Nagarkot Sunrise View Park
Nagarkot Sunrise View Park sits on the rim of the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal's Bagmati Province, roughly 32 kilometres and an hour and a half east of the capital, and it exists for one transcendent moment: the instant the first light of dawn sweeps across the wall of the Himalayas. At about 2,175 metres, the ridge catches the sunrise head-on and, on a clear morning, reveals a panoramic arc of snow peaks that few viewpoints in the world offer this close to a major city. The park is open around the clock, so the real clock here is the sunrise. The reward is a short five- to ten-minute climb from the parking area up steps to an elevated panorama deck, where visitors watch the sky turn from purple to gold and the summits ignite one by one. What makes Nagarkot special is breadth rather than a single famous peak: on the best days you can trace everything from Ganesh Himal and Langtang Lirung through Manaslu and, with really clear air, even catch a distant tip of Mount Everest.
