Chapel of Mercy
Tucked on Place de la Mairie in Monaco-Ville, the medieval old town crowning the Rock, the Chapel of Mercy is a jewel of baroque sacred art. Built in the 1630s for the Brotherhood of Black Penitents, this small single-nave church dazzles with gilded sculptures, a polychrome marble altar, and vivid ceiling frescoes of the Assumption. It remains the spiritual home of Monaco's most ancient religious confraternity. The chapel is the starting point of Monaco's most haunting tradition: the Good Friday Procession of the Dead Christ, which has wound through the narrow lanes of the Rocher after nightfall for nearly four centuries. Free to enter, it rewards those who step off the main tourist circuit with an intimate encounter with Monégasque faith, art, and living heritage.
