Salalah

Salalah · OM

Salalah

Salalah, capital of southern Oman's Dhofar province, feels like a different country within the Gulf. A thousand kilometres of stony desert separate it from Muscat, and where northern Oman runs on date palms and sun-baked stone, this coastal city trades in banana and coconut plantations, long white-sand Arabian Sea beaches and a mild, misty climate found nowhere else in Arabia. The reason most travellers come is the khareef — the monsoon that drifts inland from the cooler Arabian Sea between June and September, cloaking the mountains in cloud, turning desert hillsides lush green and setting seasonal waterfalls running while the rest of the region bakes. The second reason is frankincense: Salalah sits at the heart of the UNESCO-listed Land of Frankincense, with resin-scented souks, ancient Boswellia forests and the ruins of the ports that once supplied pharaohs, emperors and caravans bound for Petra and Egypt. Beyond the headline season, Salalah rewards slow exploration: six kilometres of empty beach and thundering blowholes west of town, boat rides past vine-draped trees in Wadi Darbat, a 2,100-metre mountain drive above the cloudline, mud-walled forts, and one of the largest sinkholes on earth. It is Oman at its most tropical, most relaxed and most unexpected.
