Ayensu River

The Ayensu is one of southern Ghana's great lowland rivers, rising in the forested Atewa (Atiwa) highlands of the Eastern Region and running some hundred kilometres south before it meets the Atlantic near the coastal town of Winneba. For travellers it is less a single sight than a ribbon of landscapes: hillside headwaters, farming towns along its banks, a mangrove-lined estuary, and a memorable river-meets-sea edge that has drawn visitors for generations. What gives the Ayensu its character is the way fresh water and sea converge. According to Effutu tradition the river was named with the exclamation "Ayee Nsu!"—"behold, this is water!"—by ancestors who found its drinkable flow beside a saltier lagoon, and that boundary between two kinds of water is still the river's signature: at its mouth the brown current slides into the surf in a scene locals call the Botanso. The surrounding Winneba wetlands and the nearby Muni-Pomadze Ramsar site make it a quietly rewarding spot for birdwatching.
