Punta Troia Castle

High above the sea on a bare rock promontory at the north-east tip of Marettimo, Punta Troia Castle looks like something a storybook would invent — except its story is far darker and more fascinating than fiction. This fortress clings to a cliff 116 metres over the water, connected to the island by nothing more than a narrow tongue of rock. Built by the Spanish between 1568 and 1571 on foundations laid by ninth-century Saracen watchmen, it served as a political prison for nearly two centuries before being abandoned, rediscovered, and carefully renovated. Today it is one of the most atmospheric visits you can make in the Egadi Islands, a place where panoramic sea views meet genuinely haunting history. What stays with most visitors is the so-called What stays with most visitors is the so-called Tremenda Fossa — the tremendous pit. This was the castle's dungeon: a seven-metre-deep, windowless void where dissident political prisoners were lowered by ropes through a hole in the ceiling, chained at the feet, and left in near-total darkness and silence. King Ferdinand II finally closed this particular horror in 1844. Standing above the pit now, hearing the wind off the sea through the stone walls, you feel the full weight of that history.
