La mangrove de la Baie de Génipa

La mangrove de la Baie de Génipa is Martinique's largest mangrove forest, a vast labyrinth of tidal canals, twisted prop roots and teeming wildlife that covers over 1,200 hectares across the communes of Ducos, Rivière-Salée and Les Trois-Îlets. Representing roughly 65% of all mangroves on the island, it is classified as a Zone Naturelle d'Intérêt Écologique, Faunistique et Floristique (ZNIEFF) and stands as one of the last great wild mangroves in the Caribbean. Visitors reach the mangrove's interior by kayak or electric boat, gliding silently through narrow channels where four species of mangrove trees form arching tunnels overhead, fiddler crabs wave from muddy banks, and green herons stalk the shallows. Guided tours bring the ecosystem alive—explaining how this forest shields the coast from erosion, nurtures juvenile fish, and sequesters carbon—while connecting to Martinique's human history, from Carib stone tools to abandoned sugar-trade canals.
