Fort Berkeley
Fort Berkeley guards the entrance to English Harbour on Antigua's southern coast, a crumbling sentinel whose cannon once protected one of the Caribbean's finest natural anchorages. Built in 1704, it is the oldest fortification in this UNESCO-listed harbour, and a short walk from Nelson's Dockyard rewards visitors with sweeping views over the water and a vivid connection to three centuries of maritime history. Today the fort is a partially restored ruin—crenelated walls, a powder magazine, a lone 1805 cannon—set on a narrow peninsula where the Atlantic meets the harbour mouth. The easy trail to reach it, the panoramic lookout over sailing vessels, and its role within the Antigua Naval Dockyard World Heritage Site make it one of the island's most rewarding historical stops.
