Corinto

El Salvador · SV

Corinto

In the dry highlands of eastern El Salvador, the small municipality of Corinto guards one of the country's most extraordinary archaeological treasures: La Gruta del Espíritu Santo, a vast natural rock shelter adorned with roughly 200 prehistoric paintings and carvings that date back an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 years. Declared a National Monument in 1972 and protected under international Blue Shield designation since 2012, this site is the principal example of rock art in all of El Salvador — a window into the lives of some of the earliest human inhabitants of this territory. Beyond the petroglyphs themselves, the landscape around Corinto — flat-topped volcanic hills, arid valleys, and dense forest framing the cave mouth — gives the visit a sense of remoteness and timelessness that few archaeological sites in Central America can match. The grotto also carries deep spiritual significance for the Lenca people and for contemporary visitors, who still come here to hold ceremonies beneath the painted walls.
