Satruphuus

Satruphuus — "Satrup House" in Low German — is a village museum that serves as the memory-keeper of Satrup, a small town in the Angeln region of southern Schleswig-Holstein. Housed in a building originally constructed in 1846 as a general store, the museum traces the commercial and industrial story that shaped this community: from the Redlefsen trading firm that grew into a major food-processing company, to the arrival of the railway and electricity in the early 1900s. Across three floors of exhibition space, visitors encounter photographs, tools, a loom, old scales, a working model of Satrup's 1930s railway stations, and the original 1903 church tower clock. What makes a visit here feel different from a larger regional museum is its intimate, community-driven character. The Satruphuus is run entirely by volunteers from the Verein für Dorfgeschichte Satrup e.V. (Village History Association), founded in 1978. Many locals drop by to chat "op Platt" — the Low German dialect the village still proudly maintains — so the atmosphere is one of living heritage rather than a static display. Admission is free, and Sunday mornings offer a rare, unhurried encounter with rural northern German history.
