Nieuw Amsterdam

Nieuw Amsterdam · SR

Nieuw Amsterdam

Nieuw Amsterdam sits at the confluence of two rivers, the broad Suriname and the quieter Commewijne, just across the water from the capital. The town is small enough to walk in twenty minutes but layered with centuries of colonial ambition, forced labor, and the vibrant cultures of Javanese and East Indian communities who make it their home today. It is the capital of Commewijne District and the gateway to a ring of former sugar, coffee, and cacao plantations that once turned this river bend into one of the wealthiest corners of the Dutch Atlantic world. The anchor here is Fort Nieuw Amsterdam, a brick fortress raised in 1747 to guard the river mouth against pirates and rival European powers. Today it is an open-air museum that holds artifacts from the slave trade, a Dutch-engineered system of locks holding back the river, and cannons pointing toward the Atlantic. Visitors rate it a must for understanding Surinamese history beyond the capital. Beyond the fort, the town rewards slower exploration: a waterfront restaurant with views over the Suriname River, a ferry landing where boats still cross to Paramaribo, and the nearby ruins and museums of Marienburg sugar factory and Peperpot plantation, all within easy cycling distance.
