Isla del Pescado

Deep in the Salar de Uyuni, 22 kilometres from the busier Isla Incahuasi, a rough rocky island rises from the white salt plain crowned with giant cacti that may be five centuries old. Isla del Pescado is the salt flat's quieter, wilder sibling: no ticket booths, no café, no gift shop — just ancient cardones standing guard over a landscape that makes you feel very small. The island earned its name from local Aymara people who saw that, when the salt flat floods in January and February, its semi-ellipsoidal silhouette reflected on the water forms the unmistakable shape of a fish. Even when the mirror effect is absent, the sight of ten-metre cacti silhouetted against infinite white is something very few places on Earth can offer. This is not a stop you add to a standard tour itinerary. Most Salar de Uyuni circuits head to Isla Incahuasi, which has trails, lookouts, and basic services. Isla del Pescado is genuinely remote, accessible mainly to travellers who arrange their own crossing or join small-group off-road adventures that push beyond the usual route.
