Laguna Tapada

Laguna Tapada is one of the quiet, waterlogged jewels of Venezuela's high páramo: a broad, marshy lagoon tucked into a mountain-ringed flat inside Sierra de La Culata National Park, about 2.5 km beyond the visitor control point on the trail to the First Mountain Refuge (Primer Refugio), above the city of Mérida. It is the kind of place you earn on foot and reward yourself in by staying a while — a peaceful basin of frailejones, grazing cattle and wild horses, fed by clear meltwater seeping out of the ridge. Its name hints at what makes it unusual: a "tapada" or "hidden" lagoon, a soft blanket of peat bog and standing water rather than a deep open lake, sitting just off the left side of the famous Valle Muerto (Dead Valley). For most visitors it is a rest-stop, a campsite and a launchpad for bigger climbs in the culminating ridges of La Culata — a place to pitch a tent under some of the darkest skies in the Venezuelan Andes.
