Bayt Baws
Bayt Baws is a hilltop fortress village south of Sanaa, Yemen, perched atop a flat-topped mountain at over 2,300 metres. For centuries it was home to a Jewish community that lived alongside Muslim neighbours within its naturally fortified walls. Today it is largely deserted — its mud-brick houses crumbling, its single gate gone — and stands as a haunting monument to a community scattered by migration and conflict. The village is nearly impossible to visit responsibly today. Yemen remains an active conflict zone, the site has been struck by air raids, and the settlement shelters internally displaced families rather than welcoming tourists. The information below documents what Bayt Baws was and what it risks becoming.
