Monument princesse Amelie

At the grand entrance to Luxembourg City's Parc Municipal, a three-metre statue gazes serenely over the gardens below. The Princess Amélie Monument honours Amélie Marie da Gloria of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (1830–1872), wife of Prince Henry who governed the Grand Duchy on behalf of King-Grand Duke William III. Inaugurated on 30 October 1876 by national subscription, it was the first public monument erected in Luxembourg after independence and the first dedicated to a woman. The statue crowns a granite pedestal from the Vosges mountains, set within a semicircular exèdre at the head of the park's main perspective axis running from Rue des Bains. Princess Amélie holds a bouquet of faded flowers — a quiet symbol of transience and devotion. Surrounding flower beds, a circular fountain in pale Gilsdorf stone, and the cascading waters of the Parc Edmond Klein below create one of the most elegant garden ensembles in the capital.
