Ponta do Ouro

Ponta do Ouro

Ponta do Ouro is a small, sun-soaked beach town at the very southern tip of Mozambique, where the warm Indian Ocean meets a frontier of sand dunes, coral reefs, and a laid-back coastal culture that has drawn divers, surfers, and wildlife lovers for decades. Its name — Portuguese for "tip of gold" — refers to the golden-hued cape at the southern end of the main beach, but the true treasure here is the marine life: resident pods of wild bottlenose, spinner, and humpback dolphins, healthy coral reefs teeming with tropical fish, and seasonal visitors including humpback whales and nesting sea turtles. Just ten kilometres from the South African border at Kosi Bay, Ponta do Ouro sits within the Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve — a 678 km² protected area that forms part of the first marine peace park in Africa. The town itself is compact and informal: sandy tracks instead of paved streets, rustic beach lodges, dive operators, local markets, and pubs serving cold 2M beer at sunset. It is one of Mozambique's most accessible coastal escapes, easy to reach from Johannesburg, Durban, or Maputo, yet far enough from everything to feel genuinely off-grid.
