Shri Dauji Maharaj Temple, Baldev
About 20 kilometres southeast of Mathura, at the eastern edge of the sacred Braj region, the town of Baldeo takes its very name from the temple at its heart: Shri Dauji Maharaj Temple, the great shrine of Balarama, elder brother of Krishna. The presiding deity — a towering black-stone figure close to seven feet tall, said to be the largest Balarama murti in all of Braj — draws pilgrims year-round, while the temple's Huranga festival each spring erupts into a colour-and-cloth celebration found nowhere else quite the same. Built around 1535, the fortified temple complex blends Braj and Rajasthani architectural traditions with massive walls, four ornate gateways, a drum house, and a broad sacred tank behind the sanctum. Its story of survival through medieval upheaval — and its role as the grand finale of Braj's forty-day Holi season — makes it one of the most compelling stops on any Braj pilgrimage.
