Nosy Boraha

Off Madagascar's eastern coast, a narrow ribbon of land stretches barely 60 kilometres long and less than 10 wide. This is Nosy Boraha, better known as Île Sainte-Marie, and it packs three experiences that would fill a much larger destination: pirate ghosts, humpback whales, and a tiny satellite island where the clocks never tick. The pirate cemetery on Île aux Forbans marks the graves of buccaneers who once raided spice ships across the Indian Ocean. The channel between the island and the mainland becomes a nursery for migrating whales each winter. And Île aux Nattes, just a short pirogue crossing away, has earned a perfect reputation among visitors as one of the most untouched beach experiences anywhere in Madagascar. This is not a resort island with a packed itinerary. Nosy Boraha rewards the traveler who slows down, who pedals a rented bicycle past mango and clove trees to a fishing village, who watches a captain bring in crab for the evening grill, and who takes the afternoon boat to a place where there are no cars, no electricity wires overhead, and no reason to check the time.
