Japan-Palau Friendship Bridge

Imagine a concrete arch floating above impossibly blue lagoon water, a 413-meter cable-stayed bridge that feels almost impossibly grand for a nation of just 18,000 people. That is the Japan-Palau Friendship Bridge, the vital link between Koror and Babeldaob island, and one of the most striking pieces of infrastructure you will encounter anywhere in the Pacific. You will almost certainly cross this bridge whether you plan to or not, since it connects Palau International Airport to the town and hotels of Koror. But treating it as merely a drive between two points would be a missed opportunity. The base of the bridge on the Airai side has evolved into a beloved local gathering spot with swimming, snorkeling, shaded picnic areas, and some of the finest sunset views in all of Palau. The bridge also carries a genuinely dramatic story. The original crossing collapsed without warning in 1996, cutting off water and electricity to the city of Koror and plunging the country into emergency. Japan responded with grant aid to build this replacement, completed and opened on January 11, 2002. The plaque at each end bearing the name Japan-Palau Friendship Bridge is not decorative — it marks a genuine act of solidarity between two nations.
