Crique patates
Just off the road between Cayenne and Macouria, Crique Patate is one of the most familiar creekside escapes on the island of Cayenne — a short white-earth track leads from the D5 to a tidal stream where locals have gathered for decades to cool off, picnic and watch the water move. Its easy reach from town and its shaded, rocky banks keep it firmly on the map for anyone wanting a quick taste of Guianese rainforest riverside life. The creek is tidal, and that is its defining feature: at low water the rocks and shallow pools are at their most inviting, while on an outgoing tide the current runs strong and rising water hides the stones. Note also that the municipality has periodically banned swimming here — for bacterial pollution in the past and for drowning risk more recently — so treat the water with respect and check the latest local signage before you wade in.
