Dacha Shalyapina

On a corner near Kislovodsk's railway station, framed by century-old firs and pines, stands a fairy-tale mansion of turrets, painted woodcarving and stained glass. Locals call it the Dacha Shalyapina — the house the world's most famous bass, Fyodor Chaliapin (Shalyapin), rented for his family one fabled summer in 1917. Today its rooms form the Literary and Musical Museum "Chaliapin's Dacha," a working cultural centre where the singer's recorded voice still fills the halls and opera legends still gather. The house is as much an architectural treasure as a musical shrine. Built in 1902–1903 by Emmanuil Khodzhaev, the first architect of the resort town, it blends Art Nouveau, neoclassical and neo-Russian styles into a single whimsical "terem," and is protected as a federal heritage site. It survives from a turbulent era when the Caucasus Mineral Waters resorts drew composers, painters and impresarios — and Chaliapin himself would step out onto the veranda to sing for anyone standing in the street below.
