Qara Dagh National Park

Tucked into the Caucasus foothills of northwestern Iran, Qara Dagh National Park is the wild, forested heart of the highland locals have always called Qaradagh, the "Black Mountain" — a name that comes from the dense green canopy that turns whole ridges almost black in the distance. Today the same landscape is more widely known as Arasbaran, and the UNESCO-registered biosphere reserve wraps around the park, but at the Aynaloo corner the mountain keeps its old, rugged character: misty oak and hornbeam forest, alpine meadows, rushing springs and cool summer air that draws people fleeing the heat of Tabriz. What makes this part of the park special is its wildlife and its relatively easy access to genuine wilderness. Aynaloo, the protected zone where this pin sits along the road between Kaleybar and the Aras River, is described by visitors as the most reachable slice of untouched Arasbaran — a place of berry-laden roadside thickets, shady picnic clearings and the chance to glimpse the Caspian red deer, the maral the reserve has been working to bring back. It is a destination for hikers, birders and families who want mountain scenery without a long, punishing drive.
