Uhuru Gardens

Uhuru Gardens is the birthplace of the Kenyan nation — the exact ground where the Union Jack came down and the Kenyan flag rose for the first time at midnight on 12 December 1963. Today, this 68-acre memorial park and museum complex in Nairobi's Lang'ata neighbourhood transforms that momentous night into a sweeping physical narrative of colonial suffering, armed resistance, and hard-won independence. The site has been dramatically reimagined since its grand reopening in December 2021. Visitors now walk through a 72-metre Tunnel of Martyrs inscribed with the names of freedom heroes, pass beneath a 24-metre triumphal column crowned with clasped hands and a dove of peace, and explore museum galleries housing 12,300 artefacts from Kenya's more than 40 ethnic communities. The entire aerial layout is shaped like Kenya's coat of arms — a traditional shield flanked by two crossed spears.
