Bisesero Genocide Memorial
Bisesero Genocide Memorial stands on Muyira Hill in Rwanda's Western Province, a place of profound significance where an estimated 40,000 Tutsi were killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Unlike almost anywhere else in the country, the community here mounted a sustained, organized resistance lasting over two months, fighting back against Interahamwe militias and soldiers with little more than sticks, stones, and farming tools. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023 as part of a serial nomination alongside the memorial sites at Kigali, Nyamata, and Murambi, Bisesero endures as both a burial ground and a monument to extraordinary courage in the face of annihilation.
