Battery Morgan
Battery Morgan sits on a narrow strip of land at the northern tip of Colón, where the Atlantic Ocean meets Limón Bay and the Panama Canal begins its climb toward the Pacific. Built between 1913 and 1916 as the primary coastal defense of the Canal's Atlantic entrance, this concrete artillery position once pointed two 6-inch guns seaward with a range of 15,000 yards, ready to repel any light warship daring to approach the Gatún and Colón locks. Today the guns are gone—dismantled and scrapped after the fort was returned to Panama in 1955—but the remaining concrete emplacements, magazines, and foundations still stand within the Colón Free Trade Zone, offering a striking glimpse into early 20th-century military engineering at one of the world's most strategic waterways.
