Hlane Royal National Park

Hlane Royal National Park is Eswatini's largest protected area, a 220-square-kilometre stretch of lowveld wilderness where elephants wander, white rhinos crowd a waterhole outside your window, and lions—the kingdom's royal symbol—roar through the night. Proclaimed in 1967 by King Sobhuza II, whose siSwati name for the park means simply "wilderness," Hlane has been rebuilt from depleted royal hunting grounds into the country's flagship big-game destination. What makes Hlane special is the combination of abundance and accessibility. Four of the Big Five roam here (buffalo is absent), with white rhino sightings virtually guaranteed from Ndlovu Camp's waterhole alone. The park also supports Africa's highest density of nesting white-backed vultures and its only population of lions. Attractively affordable self-catering accommodation, a restaurant overlooking the action, and a full menu of guided activities—from dawn game drives to rhino-tracking walks—make this a rare African safari that works as well for budget travellers as it does for wildlife photographers.
