Lagoon Aquarium

The Aquarium des Lagons in Nouméa, New Caledonia, takes visitors on a walking journey through every major aquatic environment found across this South Pacific territory — from misty mountain rivers and tangled mangrove roots to the outer face of the world's second-largest barrier reef and the deep sea beyond. Housed in a compact building on the seafront promenade at Anse Vata, it is far more than a row of fish tanks: it is a working research station, a sea turtle rescue centre, and home to species that almost nobody sees alive in the wild, including the chambered nautilus. Founded by marine biologist René Catala, who was among the first scientists in the world to document the fluorescence of corals, the aquarium has grown into a respected institution managed jointly by the City of Nouméa, the South Province, and the New Caledonian government. Today a team of twenty-two staff — aquarists, divers, researchers, animators, and maintenance technicians — keeps the exhibit running while publishing science and rehabilitating injured sea turtles each year.
