Victoria Falls
Victoria Falls is the thundering heart of western Zimbabwe — a compact, walkable tourist town built around one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Here the Zambezi River, calm and broad for hundreds of kilometres upstream, hurls itself over a sheer basalt cliff almost 1.7 kilometres wide and plummets 108 metres into a narrow gorge. The local Kololo name for the cascade, Mosi-oa-Tunya, means "the smoke that thunders", and at peak flow the rising spray is visible from dozens of kilometres away. UNESCO listed the falls as a World Heritage Site in 1989. The town is the practical gateway to the Zimbabwe side, which gives the longer, more panoramic view of the curtain, while the bridge across the gorge links you to Zambia and the closer, edge-of-the-falls perspective. Between the water and the adrenaline — rainforest walks, sunset cruises, bungee jumps and game drives — Victoria Falls offers an unusually concentrated mix of scenery and activity that suits both a first taste of Africa and an adventure-led itinerary.
