Areia Branca Beach
Areia Branca—Portuguese for "white sand"—is Dili's answer to the question every beach-hungry traveler asks: where can I get soft pale sand, calm swimmable water and somewhere to eat, all within a short hop of the capital? Sitting on the north-eastern shoulder of the Bay of Dili in the Metiaut suburb, roughly five and a half kilometres east of the city centre, this public beach runs about 600 metres, fringed with shade trees and backed by steep low hills that turn the whole cove into a small, dramatic amphitheatre. It is, above all, a beach Timorese people actually use. Cabanas sit on the sand for free, plastic chairs and picnic huts can be rented, and on Sundays the place is busy from early morning until well after dark. For a visitor, that local energy is part of the appeal: this is a slice of everyday Dili life set against white sand, a sheltered bay and a long tropical sunset.
