Thanneermalai Sri Thandayuthapani AlayamHindu temple

Taiping · MY

Thanneermalai Sri Thandayuthapani Alayam

High on the green slopes above Taiping, where the road climbs toward Bukit Larut, Thanneermalai Sri Thandayuthapani Alayam is one of the town's oldest places of worship. Its Tamil name points to the two things that define it: "Thanneermalai," the water-mountain, evoking the falls and streams that run beside it, and "Thandayuthapani," the form of Lord Murugan carrying the vel, his spear of wisdom. A hilltop Hindu temple wrapped in tropical forest and the sound of moving water, it offers a quiet, atmospheric escape that sits apart from the town's museum and lake-garden circuit. The shrine's roots go back to around 1800, when it was tended by wandering swamiyars and sanyasis beside the waterfall itself. In 1907 the British colonial authorities wanted the pool beneath the falls for swimming, and the sanctum was moved to its present hillside location, where it was officially gazetted. Ever since, the temple has been administered alongside Taiping's well-known Sri Mariamman Temple, and recent visitors describe it as a serene, well-kept sanctuary reached by a short climb up the hills.
