La Visite National Park
La Visite National Park is one of Haiti's two protected national parks, perched on the eastern ridges of the Massif de la Selle just 22 kilometers south of Port-au-Prince. At elevations between 900 and 2,275 meters, it shelters the country's largest remaining stand of Hispaniolan pine forest, a handful of endangered bird species found nowhere else on Earth, and an astonishing 85 percent of the entire Caribbean population of Black-capped Petrels. Despite decades of pressure from deforestation and agricultural encroachment, La Visite endures as a critical biodiversity refuge and one of the most rewarding birdwatching destinations in the Caribbean. Hiking through misty ravines, past karst sinkholes and seasonal waterfalls, visitors can encounter a landscape of extraordinary ecological richness that feels worlds away from the bustling capital just a short drive to the north.
